CFI INDONESIA: PPN AMBON CARRIES OUT TECHNOLOGICAL GUIDANCE ON FISHERMAN SKILLS CERTIFICATION IN MALUKU

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), through the Ambon Nusantara Fishing Port (PPN), organized a Technical Guidance (Bimtek) activity for the Fisherman Skills Certification (SKN) in 2025. The activity was officially opened by the Head of PPN Ambon, Jafar Sahubawa.

Head of Ambon Nusantara Fishing Port, Jafar Sahubawa, accompanied by WPP 715 Site Manager Hasan Sangadji, handed over seminar kits to participants of the SKN Bimtek in Pasanea, Central Maluku (June 13, 2025)

The event was attended by the Head of the Pasanea Village Government, the Head of Island Cluster III of the Maluku Province Marine Affairs and Fisheries Office, representatives from the CFI Indonesia GEF 6 Team, and SKN instructors. A total of 40 fisher participants took part in the two-day training, which included both theory and practical sessions to improve their fishing skills.

This activity was supported by funding from CFI Indonesia GEF 6 as part of a certification-based capacity building program for small-scale fishers and boat captains operating vessels sized 3 to 10 GT.

Jafar Sahubawa, Head of Ambon Ambon Nusantara Fishing Port, stated that the SKN Technical Guidance serves as a valuable platform for improving fishers’ understanding of occupational safety and fishing operations. “We hope the participants will engage fully in the entire SKN training. We also extend our gratitude to CFI Indonesia GEF 6 for supporting this activity,” said Jafar.

On the same occasion, Jafar reminded the participants to record their fish catches using the Catch Logbook, which had been previously introduced.

The SKN Technical Guidance activity in Pasanea, Central Maluku, was held on June 13–14, 2025 with grant funding from CFI Indonesia GEF 6

The materials covered in the training included Basic Navigation and Fishing Operations, Capture Fisheries Regulations, Fishing Zones and Route Classification, as well as Introduction to Occupational Safety and First Aid in Case of Marine Accidents and Fires.

This activity was well received by Pasanea fishers, who found it very beneficial in improving their understanding of the importance of safety in fishing and navigation.

Abdullah Salaputa, a fisher from Pasanea and one of the participants, acknowledged the benefits of the SKN training. He stated that the certification helped him become a more skilled and professional fisher. Similarly, Agil Makatita shared, “After participating in the SKN training, I feel more confident to go to sea and handle problems while out at sea,” he said.

It is hoped that the SKN Technical Guidance will enhance fishers’ understanding of safe and sustainable fishing practices.
