GEF 6 CFI INDONESIA : MANGROVE CRAB BIOECOLOGY DATA COLLECTION

cfi-indonesia.id.  As a commitment to support the blue economy priority program of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, ISPIKANI and GEF-6 CFI Indonesia collaborated to conduct a mangrove crab (mud crab) bioecological study in WPP 715, 717 and 718. The initial stage of the activity was carried out by conducting a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on mangrove crab bioecological data collection (discussion of action plan and methodology) on August 28-29, 2024 this activity was held at the Mercure Cikini Hotel Jakarta and was attended by various experts and mangrove crab researchers. This study was facilitated through GEF 6 CFI Indonesia funding "The Ecosystem Approach To Fisheries Management (EAFM) In Eastern Indonesia (Fisheries Management Area (FMA) - 715, 717 & 718). Components A, B, And D”, is a collaboration between KKP and WWF US GEF Agency.

This activity aims to bring together the views and experiences of various experts related to mangrove crab population data collection methods. With more accurate data, sustainable management of mangrove crabs is expected.

The inaugural meeting of the mangrove crab bioecology study in WPP 715, 717 and 718 was attended by crab and coastal fisheries experts, Ir. Muhammad Iqbal Djawad, MSc, Ph.D, Prof. Ir. La Sara, M.Si., Ph.D, Prof. Dr. Ir. Dietriech G Bengen, DEA, Dr. Nurliah Buhari, S.Pi, M.Si, Dr. James Abrahamsz, S.Pi, M.Si, accompanied by Aris Budiarto, S.Pi, M.Si, Agus Suherman, S.Pi, M.Si, and representatives of PMU GEF CFI Indonesia.

The inaugural meeting was attended by Ir. Muhammad Iqbal Djawad, MSc, Ph.D (Hasanudin University), Prof. Ir. La Sara, M.Si., Ph.D (Halu Oleo University), Prof. Dr. Ir. Dietriech G Bengen, DEA (IPB University), Dr. Nurliah Buhari, S.Pi, M.Si (Mataram University), Dr. James Abrahamsz, S.Pi, M.Si (Pattimura University). Also present were the Director of Fish Resource Management of the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries of KKP Aris Budiarto, S.Pi, M.Si and ISPIKANI Chairman Dr. Agus Suherman, S.Pi, M.Si and Nuranti Anarkhis, S.Pi, M.P representative of PMU GEF 6 CFI Indonesia. During the meeting, the experts discussed data collection methods, analysis to be used, ecosystems that correlate with mangrove crabs, and report outputs to be produced.

As a result of the meeting, the experts have compiled a guidebook as a guide in collecting and analyzing mangrove crab data.

Training of Trainers for the collection of mangrove crab bioecological data was held in the conference room of the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries, Hasanuddin University, Makassar. (8-10/9/2024)

As a series of activities to assess the bioecology of mud crabs in WPP 715, 717 and 718. ISPIKANI and GEF-6 CFI Indonesia successfully held a Seminar and Training of Trainers (ToT) Urgency of collecting mangrove crab bioecological data. The activity was held for three days on September 8-10, 2024 at the Session Room of the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries Sciences, Hasanuddin University, Makassar.

The ToT was attended by five experts and also three research lecturers from each WPP 715, 717, and 718. The activity aims to convey the methodology of the initial meeting results and design technical implementation in data collection in the field.

The Seminar on the Urgency of collecting bioecological data on mangrove crabs was held in a hybrid manner attended by a team of experts, the Rector of Hasanuddin University, lecturers and students, DKP of South Sulawesi Province lecturers, and enumerators at Hasanuddin University, Makassar. (8/9/2024)

While the Hybrid Seminar was attended by the Rector of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), Chairperson of ISPIKANI, Mangrove Crab Experts, Dean of FIKP UNHAS, South Sulawesi Provincial Marine and Fisheries Office, as well as lecturers, students, enumerators and representatives of GEF 6 CFI Indonesia.

Rector of Hasanuddin University Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc who also said that it is very necessary to establish collaborative movements in the field of fisheries between stakeholders and fisheries alumni in each region. So that the ideals of service as academics who are responsible for the sustainability of biological ecosystems can be realized.

“Through the unification of perceptions related to the experience of various experts on mangrove crab population data collection methods, it is hoped that more accurate data will be obtained so that sustainable mangrove crab management can be carried out,” said Jamaluddin.

During the seminar, experts and stakeholders said that data is the most important component in determining mangrove crab management strategies. Data is the main foundation for effective management and policy formulation. Data-driven decisions allow policy makers to make measures that are more targeted, transparent, and have a positive impact on society and environmental sustainability.
