“Inauguration of the Secretariat Office of the National Commission for the Study of Fishery Resources”
The Directorate General of Capture Fisheries, through the Directorate of PSDI, held the inauguration of the Secretariat Office of the National Commission for the Study of Fishery Resources at GMB II KKP on May 22.
The inauguration of the National Commission for the Study of Fishery Resources secretariat office which also served as a forum for discussing Komnasjiskan's work plans and was held at the same location.
This hybrid event was attended by the Director of Fisheries Resource Management, the Director of Fisheries Port Affairs, the Senior Advisor to the MKP on Fishers and Fishing Vessel Crew Protection, Prof. Dr. Ir. Indra Jaya, M.Sc as the Chair of Komnasjiskan, Komnasjiskan members, Tuna Consortium, IPNLF Indonesia Foundation, and GEF-6 CFI Indonesia.
In his written remarks, Acting Director General of Capture Fisheries, Lotharia Latif, stated that in implementing the quota-based Measured Fishing Policy (PIT), Komnasjiskan is expected to play a key role in providing up-to-date recommendations on the estimated potential and allowable catch for specific species. These include snapper and grouper in 11 WPPNRI areas, shrimp in WPPNRI 718, squid in specific WPPNRI areas, and lobster seed (BBL) in WPPNRI 573. These recommendations will inform the quota decisions made by the Fisheries Management Institutions (LPP) in each WPPNRI.
Prof. Dr. Ir. Indra Jaya, M.Sc, Chair of Komnasjiskan, expressed his gratitude for the Ministry’s support in providing the secretariat office. He stated that the secretariat will be activated immediately to support Komnasjiskan’s work plan, in line with the mandate from the Minister.
Mohamad Abdi Suhufan, Senior Advisor to the MKP on Fisher Empowerment and Fishing Vessel Crew Protection, also conveyed his support and hopes for the inauguration of Komnasjiskan’s Secretariat Office on May 22.
On the same occasion, Mohamad Abdi Suhufan, Senior Advisor to the MKP on Fisher Empowerment and Fishing Vessel Crew Protection, emphasized the importance of data collection for fish stock assessment. Komnasjiskan is encouraged to collaborate with universities and engage students to support these initiatives.
Similarly, Director of Fisheries Port Affairs, Adi Chandra, conveyed his support for the involvement of 700 post-production enumerators stationed at base ports in collecting data for fish stock studies.
Director of Fisheries Resource Management, Syahril Abd Raup, along with Director of Fisheries Port Affairs, Adi Chandra, and Chair of Komnasjiskan, Prof. Dr. Ir. Indra Jaya, M.Sc, conducted a symbolic “tumpeng” rice-cutting ceremony at the Komnasjiskan meeting room in GMB II KKP on May 22.
Syahril Abd Raup, Director of PSDI, remarked that the inauguration of Komnasjiskan’s Secretariat is a momentum to improve the commission’s future performance, particularly in providing recommendations to the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries regarding resource potential estimates, allowable catch, and utilization levels.
He also expressed hope that Komnasjiskan’s initiatives would continue to be supported by KKP partners. In 2025, several Komnasjiskan initiatives will be facilitated by the GEF-6 CFI Indonesia, particularly to ones that support quota-based fishing program. They include capacity building in fisheries data processing, quota calculations, Komnasjiskan meetings, and the development of a fish resource quota dashboard.
Looking ahead, Komnasjiskan is expected to play an active role in the WPPNRI’s LPPs, particularly in guiding fisheries management issues. Komnasjiskan is also expected to support data collection for stock assessments, serve as a scientific panel, and act as a scientific service provider (SSP) with standardized protocols for data collection and analytical methods.
