IN COLLABORATION WITH UNIVERSITAS PADJAJARAN, EMPOWERING THE TELUK WONDAMA COMMUNITY TO DEVELOP INTEGRATED COASTAL ECOTOURISM

Padjadjaran University (UNPAD) conducted a coastal community empowerment training program in Aisandami Village, Teluk Wondama Regency, West Papua. The training focused on Institutional and Socioeconomic Strengthening in the Development of Integrated Coastal Ecosystems as Alternative Livelihoods for Coastal Communities.

A total of 45 participants took part in the training. They consisted of micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) owners, homestay operators, and tour guides from Aisandami Village in Teluk Duairi District and Menarbu Village in Roon District. Also present was the Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Padjadjaran University, who also served as the Activity Team Leader, Prof. Dr. Sc. Agr. Yudi Nurul Ihsan, S.Pi., M.Si.

“This activity is a vital step toward improving the economic potential of the coastal communities in Aisandami and Menarbu. We hope that with the new skills gained, the communities can develop ecotourism that is not only appealing but also preserves the environment. This reflects our commitment to building Indonesia from the east and it is in line with the vision of a Golden Indonesia 2045,” said Yudi.

Kristian Y. Manupapami, S.IP., Head of Teluk Duairi District, also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to KKP, UNPAD, and CFI Indonesia for organizing the institutional training to support ecotourism in his village. He noted that the training addresses the real needs of Aisandami Village as a tourist destination that has already attracted visitors from various countries.

“The support from UNPAD and GEF-6 means a lot to our community. We hope the knowledge gained will be used sustainably. With these new skills in tourism and business management, we believe the community will be better equipped to face economic challenges and preserve the environment,” said Kristian.

The training material provided was very comprehensive. Participants received guidance on developing infographic, making Business Identification Number (NIB), tour guiding, and safety in Snorkeling and Diving Tourism.

The participants found the training highly beneficial. One of them, Yopi Kereway from Aisandami Village, shared his experience: “This training was very useful and opened up new insights for us, especially regarding infographics and tourism safety. The skills we learned in this training gave us the confidence to further develop our village’s potential and attract more tourists,” said Yopi.

Throughout the training, guided by professional trainers, participants successfully produced tourist trail maps or trackings, infographics, and facilitated the issuance of Business Identification Numbers (NIB) for CFI Indonesia’s fostered business groups.
