CFI INDONESIA: IN COLLABORATION WITH IPB UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITAS PATTIMURA HELD ISOSS 2024 INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR – PROMOTING MARINE INNOVATION FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

The 2nd International Seminar on Ocean Sciences and Sustainability (ISOSS) 2024, organized by the Department of Marine Science and Technology, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), IPB University, in collaboration with the FPIK of Universitas Pattimura (UNPATTI), was successfully held on November 4–5, 2024, at Hotel Santika Premiere, Ambon. The seminar carried the theme “Navigating the Blue Frontier: Measured Fishing and Ocean Science in Harmony” and brought together over 250 participants from various countries, both in person and online. The event was facilitated by grant funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF-6) CFI Indonesia.

The seminar opened with remarks from the Dean of FPIK of IPB University, Prof. Fredinan Yulianda; a report from WWF GEF Agency Lead Specialist, Heike Lingertat; opening remarks by IPB University Rector, Prof. Arif Satria; and welcome remarks from UNPATTI Rector, Prof. Freddy Leiwakabessy.

The event was officially opened by the Governor of Maluku, represented by the Head of the Maluku BAPPEDA, Dr. Anton A. Lailossa.

Plenary and parallel sessions featured in-depth discussions on current challenges and opportunities in marine sectors, including climate change, bioprospecting, food security, and sustainable ocean technology.

The seminar was also attended by representatives from institutions such as the Ambon City Government, the Maluku Provincial Marine Affairs and Fisheries Office, Maluku BAPPEDA, the Ambon Fisheries Training and Extension Center (BPPP), Ambon Nusantara Fishing Port (PPN), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Maluku Marine and Fisheries Polytechnic, IPB University, and UNPATTI.

Key Messages

In his opening remarks, Prof. Fredinan Yulianda, Dean of FPIK IPB University, emphasized the essential role of science and technology in supporting the sustainability of marine resources. “This seminar is tangible proof of inter-institutional collaboration to advance research that positively impacts our marine sector. With this devotion, we can protect ocean wealth for future generations,” he said.

Heike Lingertat, Lead Specialist of the WWF GEF Agency, highlighted the urgency of international cooperation in addressing marine challenges. “Only through global synergy can we find solutions to serious threats such as climate change and overfishing. ISOSS 2024 is an important step in building collaborative bridges between researchers, policymakers, and practitioners,” she affirmed.

Prof. Arif Satria, Rector of IPB University, stated in his remarks that marine science plays a vital role in sustainable development. “We are proud to witness this seminar become a forum for knowledge exchange and the formulation of practical strategies to support a sustainable blue economy,” he said.

Prof. Freddy Leiwakabessy, Rector of UNPATTI, expressed his pride in Ambon being the host city for the seminar. “As the marine science hub of Eastern Indonesia, Ambon is the ideal place to discuss current research and policy that directly impacts coastal communities,” he noted.

Dr. Anton A. Lailossa, Head of Maluku Province BAPPEDA, representing the Governor of Maluku, stressed the importance of regional governments in supporting marine research and innovation. “We are committed to supporting initiatives that benefit the well-being of coastal communities and preserve marine ecosystems,” he stated.

Highlights and Achievements of ISOSS 2024

Aimed at promoting collaborative marine research, the seminar was attended by marine experts, academics, students, and government representatives from various countries including Malaysia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Turkey. The keynote speaker was the Indonesian Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, represented by the Head of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Education Center, Dr. Alan F. Koropitan. In his presentation, Dr. Alan discussed Indonesia’s blue economy policy. “The implementation of the blue economy is key to achieving inclusive and environmentally friendly national development. This seminar helps disseminate awareness and support for this policy,” he said.

Recommendations for the Future

Dr. Steven Solikin, Chair of ISOSS 2024, concluded that the success of this seminar confirms the importance of ongoing collaboration. With support from various stakeholders, ISOSS 2024 succeeded in becoming a vital platform to reinforce commitments toward ocean sustainability and the welfare of coastal communities.
